From players taking a knee during the national anthem to teams boycotting playoff games in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake, basketball’s premier league has been at the forefront of this vital conversation.
In many ways, the NBA’s leadership in this area should come as no surprise. The league has long prided itself on being a bastion of progressivism and inclusivity, embracing players from all corners of the world and championing a message of unity and diversity. And with a roster of superstar players who are predominantly Black, the NBA is uniquely situated to address issues of racism head-on.
One of the most powerful statements that the NBA has made in recent months has been its decision to paint “Black Lives Matter” on the court during the 2020 playoffs. This bold move was a clear signal that the league was not afraid to take a stand on a deeply divisive issue. It also sparked a backlash from some fans, who accused the league of becoming too political and demanded that players “stick to sports.”

And if the NBA can help inspire that kind of positive change, then all the better.
